Incite Magazine Launch

11/17/06

Welcome to the debut of Incite Magazine – bringing you the power of insight, giving you the power to incite!  We are pleased to launch this magazine during a momentous time in America.  On November 7th, American citizens united to hold the government accountable and demand better.   Voters rejected the pattern of lies, abuses, and assaults on democracy that have been the hallmark of the last six years.  By declaring that we will not allow manipulation and fear to control us and determine our vote, we changed the direction of America.  However, changing the direction is not the same as progressing towards a destination.  Now is the time to insist on progress, to require the best of our public officials, to make our voices louder than ever, and to incite hope, change, and the fulfillment of a better world.

Incite Magazine is a platform and community that links commentary and action, featuring articles that call for a compassionate and honest world while providing readers with the tools and resources to help fight for it.  Every article includes a What You Can Do About It section to help our readers learn more, get involved, and fight for change.

In this inaugural issue, we have a diverse selection of articles that range from scientific analysis to international affairs to media criticism.

Sally Smyth, who has studied food distribution networks in South Africa and local food networks in Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and Portland, Oregon, writes about Food Policy Councils (FPCs) in America.  Smyth explores which food system is the most rational and how it can be implemented.  The vehicle to achieve that end, Smyth contends, is FPCs.  “[They] have become the standard body created by cities and regional governments to act as the liaison between all stakeholders in creating a more rational food system.”

Aaron Sussman, an Incite editor, debunks Bush administration propaganda in They Hate Our Freedom: The Truth about the Military Commissions Act of 2006Sussman explores the real effects of the act on our civil liberties while he mourns the death of habeas corpus.  Find out why you can be declared an “enemy combatant” by this freedom-hating administration.

Ashley Casale, an environmental activist, explores the concept of green building construction inGo Green: The Importance of Sustainable Design in the 21st Century.  Casale connects her research on green buildings to its application at Wesleyan University, where many buildings incorporate environmentally sound policies.  “However,” Casale writes, “despite all these notable steps towards environmental stewardship, the University Center will still not be LEED certified because it did not take the option into account early enough in the process for it to be economically viable.”

Writers tackle many topics in this first issue, including the genocide in Sudan, anti-Minutemen protests at Columbia University, and more.  Explore the website further by listening to interviews with experts and politicians including Ned Lamont, Cindy Sheehan, David Halperin, Anthony Romero, and Dave Lindorff.  Also, check out the links page for more resources and the Action Calendar to see all the relevant upcoming events and opportunities to get involved.
