Incite Magazine Mission Statement
When Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote, “Every idea is an incitement,” he forgot about those ideas that will never be heard, that are drowned out by megaphones projecting only propaganda for the status quo. Ideas and insight are essential for progress, but they only truly incite when they are heard and connected to action. We are in the middle of a media revolution. While a handful of transnational conglomerates control the mainstream media, people are standing up to transform the old corporate model of passive consumption into a new grassroots model of active citizenship that promotes, rather than undermines, democracy. The means of media production are in our hands; now we just need to connect and get the word out. Incite Magazine originated as a collaboration among students at Wesleyan University who believe that progressive ends must be realized through free exchanges of ideas, opinions, and critiques that are then applied to action. It is our mission not only to offer incisive, well-researched commentary and bold, responsible reporting, but to provide a network for writers and activists who share progressive principles and to conclude each article with information on how to become active and involved. Incite Magazine fosters the principles of cooperation and citizenship and endeavors to be a central venue in the community for progressive voices that come from a variety of media and organizations. With these coalitions, we aim to bridge commentary and theory with activism and practice, reinvigorating the belief that, through collaboration and dedication, progressive change is not only possible but inevitable. Incite Magazine believes in citizen engagement and reclaiming the media to build a compassionate and honest society. We hope you will join our discussion and help us create a magazine and community that can positively influence the way we see the world and our own potential to change it – something that can incite true progress. |
