Submissions Policy
Article Submissions
Incite Magazine accepts submissions on a wide variety of topics from writers who are committed to progressive action and responsible journalism. Submissions of any length will be considered, but we recommend a length roughly between 750 and 2200 words.
Articles should offer original insight into an issue with social and political importance - we are especially interested in issues that are overlooked by the mainstream and alternative press and that engender a link between commentary and activism. We also encourage original reporting, local stories, investigative journalism, and interviews.
As part of our goal is to incite progressive action, we ask all writers to provide a “What You Can Do About It” section – information included at the end of every article on how readers can become involved with the issue. Helpful information to include would be: * Sources for further learning (books, articles, websites, etc.)
Please see articles already published on InciteMagazine.org for the proper “What You Can Do About It” format. In addition to providing resources for action in every article, Incite Magazine writers should strive to reveal the core of every story by exposing who is affected and what is at stake. When writing about any issue with political or social relevance, the fundamental questions that should be asked include: “Who benefits?” “Who are the victims?” “What common traits exist within these groups?” By providing a human perspective, journalists can better expose the implications and sources of each political problem and identify more effective methods of becoming involved and fighting for change.
Article submissions should be fully proofread, fact-checked, and all sources should be cited either through links within the text (to insert a link using MS Word, highlight the text, select "Hyperlink" from the "Insert" menu, and type in the URL of the source you are linking to) or, if absolutely necessary, through endnotes. Please also attach any images that you would like included in your article.
Incite Magazine reserves the right to edit any submissions for length, style, and content before publication. However, the editors work closely with the writers during the editing process and writers will always have prior approval before publication.
All submissions are for the on-line version of the magazine only. The print edition will be a selection of articles chosen by the editors.
Response Articles
We encourage readers to engage the Incite Magazine writers with intelligent responses. Response articles will be linked to at the end of the original article and will also appear on the main page. Response articles should be substantive – they should not simply agree with or object to the original article, but expand on it and offer an additional perspective.
Please specify what article you are responding to in your submission.
Short comments, letters, or responses to articles might also be published with the permission of the writer.
Other Types of Submissions
We encourage you to submit not only articles, but also events for the Action Calendar (Action@InciteMagazine.org), resources for the “What You Can Do About It” sections, political cartoons, photojournalism, sound files, artwork, and anything else that fits with the mission and standards of Incite Magazine.
Send all inquiries about submissions to Editors@InciteMagazine.org
